LMS (learning management systems); moodle etc

We are currently seeing LMS systems across universities change there LMS sytsems. Western Australia university is currently looking to change there LMS as stated in the review. Webct, moodle and blackboard are three LMS which I am aware of to date. The Universities moodle has been a great addition to my study by: providing weekly information, web articles, assessment information and examplas, discussion forums with mailing notification, and much more.

The school where I am currently doing my first EPL have mentioned using an LMS to support the learners. I believe that this can enhance the learning environment by providing more than one avenue for information.
As some students have had minimal contact with ICT in schools, introduction to a new platform will require an extensive consultation process. This process will direct the design process and which tools best fit the students.

  1. Gary, I do love your link between the old teaching system of antique LMS's and the discarded filing cabinet in the photo. Like everything in life, everything is changing. Whether it is for the better or not. Schools and Universities alike need to change, upgrade and improve. It is good to see that the school you are at is looking into improving its systems to eventually improve its students ability to be more successful in their learning. The underlying facter for this venture for that school and many more is the cost of the dollar.

  2. LMS are a beneficial addition to most learning situations. As you said Moodle provides weekly guides and assessment information. I believe the major postive factor of a LMS is the fact that information for a particular subject can be accessed from one point. Depending on the LMS it can also act as a point of collaboration for either students or teachers, a place where the one topic will be discussed and own prior knowledge be built upon. As you said Gary, it provides another avenue for information.
But I believe a LMS cannot yet provide the same level of quality learning as a face to face tute or lecture and don't think it ever will. Learning is social after all isn't it? S
